How not to stretch before golfing.

With all of the information about the need for flexibility, sometimes there is a tendency to perform stretches the way that we were taught in high school, which may or may not be useful or effective. In fact it may even be harmful.

There is an anecdotal story of one of the pro golfers on tour heading into the training tent prior to a match and found his balance so poor that he was ’stumbling up to the tee’. There is an important difference between dynamic stretches and static stretches.

A dynamic stretch is what is need in your pre-round warmup. The time for static stretches (lasting 10-15 seconds each) is no more than two hours before a match or immediately after a round (of golf not beers!).

There are profound neuromuscular changes that occur as a result of stretching and so it is important to know what and when to stretch.
